We are commanded to be zealous. Revelation 3:19: As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.One of Jesus* purposes for dying for us is that we might be zealous of good works. Titus 2:14: Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
I wish that those adjectives would describe all Christians: redeemed, purified, peculiar and zealous. Being lukewarm is worse in God*s eyes than being cold. Lukewarm is satisfied with the status quo. In a sense those who are lukewarm have come half-way to the Lord and they think it is enough. If one is cold toward the Lord there is more hope that he might realize that he needs to get heated up than there is for the lukewarm. When we are on the fence we are not on God*s side of the fence. How often each day do we peek over the fence to see something on the other side? We should already know what is there, coldness and lukewarmness. And we should not desire them. We were there all the time before we trusted Christ. Peter Marshall: We are too Christian really to enjoy sinning and too fond of sinning really to enjoy Christianity.James 1:8: A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. James 4:8: Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
There may be some hope for some of the lukewarm in that Jesus once gave a man partial sight and then perfect sight. Mark 8:23: And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. 24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. 25 After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.The Lord will forgive lukewarm if we want to escape from it. Proverbs 28:13: He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. |
